Blog: How Cities Inspire Graphic Design

Each place I’ve lived and worked has provided its own special inspiration to my graphic design solutions. Whether it’s the history, culture, and style of one of the fashion capitals of the world, Milan, the entrepreneurial grit and creative energy of Seattle, or the laid back care free vibe of Lake Chelan, I’ve been fortunate to practice my craft, graphic design, in varied environments. Over the past 3 years I’ve been able to add yet another completely different inspiration to the list in the small town of Livingston, Montana.

Livingston has a very cool and unique vibe. With a thriving visual and performing arts community mixed with blue-collar folks, farmers, and ranchers, it’s a place where you can find people from all walks sharing a beer at a local bar. Add to it the beautiful historic main street, breathtaking views of the surrounding snow capped mountains, and the Yellowstone river flowing through town, it’s as inspiring as any place I’ve been. I often spend my lunch break walking around main street, breathing in the fresh air, saying hi to friends, and getting the latest news from shop owners in the know. It’s a great way to unwind, recharge my mind, and be ready for a creative afternoon in the studio.

What’s funny is as I reflect, in many ways it’s no different than what I’ve done my whole life. In each place, regardless of the size of the city/town, I’ve spent lunchtime walking around my local area, unwinding and recharging, being inspired. Sure there are differences between the inspiration gained from the Duomo in Milan, chic Ballard Avenue in Seattle, tranquil Lake Chelan, or eclectic Livingston Montana, but each inspires my graphic design and I feel lucky to get to live it all!
