1990s Design

Hovie earned his graphic design degree in Seattle in the early 1990s and was heavily influenced by the expressive, energetic, raw design of the region/times. That design style continued in his early professional work. Below is a collection of Hovie designs from that era.

Design Hovie Studios

2001 website for Design Hovie Studios. This very innovative site was designed by Hovie and designer/developer Yoshi and was a catalyst for Hovie forming a partnership with Winsome Italia and moving the company to Milan. Design Hovie Studios

Design Hovie Studios

2000 website for Design Hovie Studios. This was the first site under the official Design Hovie Studios, inc. name, and featured unique use of gif animation and pop up windows that allowed for a consistent frame for the visuals. Design Hovie Studios

Design > Hovie

1999 website for Design > Hovie, the second incarnation of what is now Design Hovie Studios. It featured multiple backgrounds and grids that made for an ever changing viewing experience. Design > Hovie

Hovie Hawk International

1998 website for Hovie Hawk International, the first incarnation of what is now Design Hovie Studios. The original, it featured a set navigational structure set over vibrant and layered visuals. Hovie Hawk International

Seattle Mariners

The Nintendo sponsored Ken Griffey Jr. give away shirt for the Seattle Mariners, done in the popular scratch series of designs Hovie created while working at BD&A. The artwork was made by over exposing photos in the dark room, scratching the actual photo, scanning it and placing it over various distorted shapes. Designed while working at BD&A.

San Antonio Spurs

The David Robinson give away shirt for the San Antonio Spurs, done in the popular scratch series of designs Hovie created while working at BD&A. The artwork was made by over exposing photos in the dark room, scratching the actual photo, scanning it and placing it over various distorted shapes. Designed while working at BD&A.

Nintendo

A Pog Gameboard design for Nintendo. Design was created by overlaying various elements, printing, crumpling up the paper, kicking it around the parking lot, scanning and overlaying again. Designed while working at BD&A.

Indiana Pacers

Rally Rag design for the Indiana Pacers. The design was the precursor of the popular scratch series Hovie created. Designed while working at BD&A.

DMA Cyber Media

Poster and brochure for the DMA Cyber Media conference. Done in the mid 90s, it was the first project Hovie worked on where the file size exceeded 100Mb (something normal today but very rare at the time). Designed while working at Graphic Associates.

Addict Wear

Logo, brand, and brochure for Addict Wear Golf Wear. Addict Wear was one of the first to embrace the new generation of golfers that were not as proper at their predecesors. Designed while working at Graphic Associates and Design Hovie Studios.
